A muddler is a bar pestle used to gently press fruit, berries, sugar, herbs, and spices in a glass or shaker. It is used in drinks such as the Mojito, Caipirinha, and Old Fashioned when you need to release juice, essential oils, or aroma. The working end can be smooth or toothed: smooth muddlers are kinder to mint and herbs, while toothed ones work better with citrus and firm fruit. Do not overdo it: pressing mint or citrus peel too hard can add bitterness.
